Lasers
"Laser" stands for "Light
Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Lasers are very
useful and have a wide variety of uses. For instance, they are used
at your grocery check-out to scan the bar code, they are used for
laser eye surgery, they are used in laser printers and laser
pointers, they are everywhere.
The main concern with lasers is
there potential to cause eye injury. Lasers are unique in that the
light they produce travels in a straight line, unlike a light bulb
which radiates outwards in all directions. Essentially, lasers with
enough power can cause burns to your eye's retina, the part of the
eye that lets you see.
Lasers need to be treated with
respect. When using lasers, certain safety procedures need to be
followed. Any laser put into use has to be classified (i.e. classes
1-4) and have a plan in place for its successful introduction into
the workplace. GTA Environmental can help you classify your laser
and develop a plan for its safe usage.
